 2016 Preview 


       Walter Wellborn completed the 2015 season with a 6-4 record. With their 5-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 3A region six, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Walter Wellborn's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Lauderdale County by a score of 22-7.

       Since 2010, Walter Wellborn has gone a combined 46-23. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 3A over the past six seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Walter Wellborn has managed to compile a record of 128-139. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 3A and 215th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2009.

       The Panthers are led by head coach Jeff Smith who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 50-30 over the past seven seasons at Walter Wellborn. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smith.

       Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in nineteen season stands at 126-85 (59.7%). His 126 wins rank 37th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of fourteen times and won one region championship.

       The Walter Wellborn Panthers will play in Class 3A region five during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Panthers remain in 3A but move from region six over to region five.

       Region five will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. The Panthers will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region five this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2008 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2016.

       The Panthers open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Saks on Friday, August 26 at Jack Stewart Field. Last year the Saks Wildcats finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in second place in Class 4A region six. The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to West Limestone by a score of 42-36.

       Walter Wellborn and Saks have met a total of 60 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 40-20-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2015 with Walter Wellborn winning by a score of 21-20.

       Walter Wellborn returns 3A All-State Senior athlete Jordan Montgomery. He was named to the first team last season.
